Those who have been keeping an eye on the DoD\u2019s CMMC program will have noted the significant overhaul represented by CMMC 2.0. However, because the program is not yet finalized, there may be additional changes for assessment and certification.<\/p>\n
Streamlined Requirements for CMMC 2.0<\/h3>\n
This current version reduces the program\u2019s complexity by cutting out two in-between certification tiers and by streamlining requirements laid out by supporting standards:<\/p>\n

- CMMC level 1 \u201cFoundational\u201d is based on Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) Clause 52.204-21<\/strong> (Basic Safeguarding of Covered Contractor Information Systems)<\/em>. This clause describes a set of minimum requirements to secure Federal Contract Information (FCI).<\/li>\n
- CMMC level 2 \u201cAdvanced\u201d aligns with the National Institute of Standards and Technology<\/strong> (NIST<\/strong>) 800-171 Rev 2<\/strong>, which describes 110 requirements to protect Certified Unclassified Information (CUI).<\/li>\n
- CMMC level 3 \u201cExpert\u201d incorporates the 110 requirements laid out by NIST 800-171 Rev 2, as well as requirements described in NIST 800-172.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

The CMMC 2.0 updates did more than streamline requirements (specifically, eliminating CMMC-specific requirements that did not appear in either FAR 52.204-21 or NIST 800-171\/800-172). Looking Ahead to CMMC 2.0 Rollout<\/h3>\n
On December 26, 2024, the DoD submitted Rule Proposal 88, FR 89058<\/a>. The public commentary period closed on February 26, 2024. The rulemaking process is expected to continue through 2024 and possibly 2025.<\/p>\n
In the meantime, all CMMC pilot programs have been suspended. Certification is not required for any contract until rules have been finalized. The final rules will include a 60-day public comment period prior to implementation. There may be additional requirements in the finalized CMMC program.<\/p>\n
However, because CMMC 2.0 is based on existing requirements<\/strong> (FAR 52.204-21 and NIST 800-171), DIB contractors handling CUI are expected to have cybersecurity solutions in place before CMMC rollout<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
