The numbers almost don\u2019t seem real, but the trend of cybercrime continues to rise to staggering heights. Every day illustrates the critical need for intelligent cybersecurity solutions to protect data without jeopardizing productivity and efficiency. Governments have invested heavily in cybersecurity development. These efforts serve to better protect citizens, improve public programs, maintain defense operations, and support critical infrastructure industries.<\/p>\n

Even as governments mandate cybersecurity requirements and promote technology solutions, threat actors develop strategies to exploit security gaps. In fact, \u201ccritical infrastructure is the target cybercriminals go after most frequently. State institutions and political systems are the second most common target, with more than 450 reported incidents in 2023.\u201d \u2014Statista<\/a>, data analysis from the European Repository of Cyber Incidents (ERCI).<\/p>\n

The challenge to balance ease of access with data security is perennial. The more useful the data, the more vulnerable it is to attack. The more security we add, the harder it becomes for that data to be useful. Governments are especially vulnerable because of the vast amounts of sensitive and confidential data they collect, store, and leverage on a daily basis.<\/p>\n

Locking the data up and throwing away the key can never be the solution \u2013 without access to data, it becomes meaningless. Without data, we are mired in chaos, unable to understand the possible repercussions of our choices.\u00a0Yet enabling access to data poses a significant risk to governments, even if that access is guarded by what we could call the typical cybersecurity solutions available today.<\/p>\n

There are many technology solutions available to government and private-sector organizations, spanning across networks, applications, databases, integrations, and cloud and on-premises infrastructure. Tools have been developed to solve specific access problems, such as network firewalls, identity authentication, activity monitoring systems, and data encryption.<\/p>\n

However, resource constraints may change the question from \u201cWhat would an organization like<\/em> <\/strong>to implement for secure data access?\u201d to \u201cWhat can an organization afford<\/em> <\/strong>to implement for secure data access?\u201d The challenge for government organizations lies in the difference between the answers.<\/p>\n
